Becoming a Christian

Is being good enough?

When asked if you know if you’ll go to heaven, a lot of people answer “Well, I’m a good person so I hope so.” But the fact is, we can never be good enough. Romans 3:23 tells us, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” All. Romans 6:23 shows the consequences of that sin: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

But God loves us and wants all of us to know His abiding and enduring love. So much so that He sent His only Son Jesus to die for those sins and to take our consequence upon Himself so that we could have life everlasting. Romans 5:8: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” He just asks that we believe. “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9-10) “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)

If you would like to become a Christian, here is a simple prayer you can pray to God. Just saying these words will not save you. Believing in your heart and declaring to God that you know you are a sinner that needs a savior, repenting of those sins, and knowing you can’t do it yourself: the only way is a relationship with Jesus Christ and relying on Him for that salvation.

Dear Lord,
I’m a sinner.
Please forgive me.
Come into my life and cleanse me of my unbelief.
I believe in you and in salvation through the blood of Jesus.
I turn from sin and trust in Jesus alone as my Savior.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

About Misfits for Jesus

How it all began

Randy Abbott and Jon Schultz met at a St. Louis homeless shelter where they felt led by the Spirit of God to reach out to the homeless. After going separate avenues in ministry to the homeless, they joined together to create Misfits for Jesus to serve the homeless of St. Louis from May 2007 until April 2012.

Thursday night cookouts and Bible studies at an abandoned building in downtown St. Louis soon transformed into brief interactive messages, the distribution of food and clothing, and the opportunity to meet many new friends and brothers and sisters in the Lord who very likely would not be attending church. The heart of Misfits for Jesus was to bring church to them.

Misfits today

After prayerful consideration, Randy and a core group of Misfits went to the Warrenton and Wright City, Missouri areas to continue spreading the good news about Jesus Christ.

The Church is people, not a building. God put it on the hearts of Randy and Jon to feed the homeless both physically and spiritually through brief encounters. But even more than that, they long to disciple whomever the Lord brings their way. That is the heart of the Misfits for Jesus ministry that always remains. The ministry has grown with Randy Abbott as Pastor and Barry Price as Associate Pastor.

Randy started working with a painting contractor out of high school, which is where he was introduced to drugs and the party lifestyle. After many failed attempts to fit in at various churches, a Baptist pastor on a cold call in April 1993 explained the gospel. Randy heard that Jesus died for sinners, even extreme ones like him. On May 1, 1993, Randy and his wife Lynn trusted in Jesus as Lord and Savior.

In 2006 the call to the streets of St. Louis began a six-year odyssey to minister to “the least of the least.” In 2012, God led Randy to plant Misfits for Jesus church in Wright City.

Barry Price

What began as casual partying in Barry’s teenage years turned into a Godless existence that spiraled out of control. Then in 1993 his friend and business partner Randy gave his life to Jesus. The testimony of Randy’s changed life got Barry’s attention. “There’s something to this thing… something nobody ever told us before!” The same Baptist preacher challenged Barry to examine the scriptures. Barry found Jesus, and his life has never been the same.

Barry has been involved with Misfits for Jesus from the very beginning. It started downtown when he was repairing and renovating bicycles for the homeless.

Chapters

Misfits for Jesus is now in two states and three countries.

  • Warrenton, Missouri

    Randy Abbott and Barry Price. Worship, Bible study, prayer, and outreach across Warren County.

  • Wisconsin

    Carrying on the work of its late president, Bill Casey.

  • India

    Pastor Baburao Penke came to Christ at 19. He leads worship, teaches Bible classes, and cares for orphans and children in poverty.

  • Uganda

    Ayise Moses, Uganda President. Raised in poverty and mentored by Randy, he preaches across Kampala and gets Bibles into people’s hands.

Statement of Faith

We believe that as Christ followers we are all on this journey, and recognize that some of us are at different places on the journey and some of our theologies may be a bit different.

We believe:

  1. All Scripture (New and Old Testaments) is the inspired word of God. 2 Timothy 3:16
  2. There is one true God who created the world. Genesis 1:1
  3. God is present in three forms, also known as the Trinity. Matthew 28:19
  4. God created man in His own image. Genesis 2:7
  5. Man fell from the original state of righteousness by voluntary disobedience to God’s command, bringing sin into the world. It is impossible for us to live a sinless life. Genesis 3; Romans 3:23
  6. The penalty for sin is death (Hell), but God’s gift (Jesus) will give us eternal life. Romans 6:23
  7. God loved the world so much He sent His Son to pay the penalty for our sins. John 3:16
  8. You must be born again (spiritually) to enter heaven. If we confess with our mouth and believe in our hearts in Jesus and His resurrection, salvation will take place. Everyone who does so will be saved. John 3:3; Romans 10:9, 13
  9. Jesus came to the world to save us, not to condemn us. John 3:17
  10. When Jesus ascended to heaven, He sent us His Holy Spirit to be our Counselor and to guide us. He also convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. John 16:5, 13
  11. The filling or empowering of the Holy Spirit, often a conscious experience, for ministry today. Acts 4:31
  12. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are in operation in the church today. 1 Corinthians 12:1-11; Romans 11:29
  13. Jesus commissioned everyone when He ascended to preach the Gospel to everyone, and in His name great miracles will accompany those who believe. Mark 16:15-18
  14. Heaven and Hell are real places. 2 Corinthians 12:1-4; Revelation 4:1-2; Mark 9:42-48; Revelation 20:11-15

We also believe in meeting people where they are, without condemnation or judgment, and presenting the Gospel of Jesus with love and respect to those to whom we are speaking.
